The Parent / Guardian Portal
Overview
The American Digital Education Parent Portal gives parents and guardians a secure window into their student’s progress: the same scores, mastery, and growth data their teachers see, in a view built just for families.
It is a read-only companion to the classroom. Parents can watch mastery build lesson by lesson, follow assignments and due dates, and understand exactly where a student is thriving or needs a hand, all without any ability to alter grades or coursework. Everything a parent sees is scoped, on our servers, to only the students their teacher has connected to them.
One login, every child, every teacher
If a family has more than one student on ADE, or a student has more than one teacher, it all appears under a single parent login automatically. There is nothing to reconfigure and no second account to manage.
For Parents & Guardians
Your student’s teacher sets up your access. From there, claiming your account and signing in take only a minute, and you can use a password or your existing Google account, whichever you prefer.
Getting Your Account
Your student’s teacher creates your account. You’ll receive an email, “You have been invited to American Digital Education by [your teacher’s name]”, with a Claim My Account button. That link is yours alone: it expires after 7 days and stops working the moment your account is set up.
On the claim page you have two options:
- Use your Google account (recommended). No password to remember: connect the Google account you already use and sign in with one click from then on.
- Set a password. Enter your name and choose a password (at least 8 characters, with an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number, and a special character).
Either way, you land directly on your dashboard.
Signing In
From lessons.americandigitaledu.com, click the purple Parent / Guardian Portal button. The Parent Portal page gives you two options:
- Sign Agreement. Sign a Master Agreement for Attendance Recovery, Short-Term Independent Study, or Long-Term Independent Study. No account needed; you’ll just need the agreement code from your school.
- Sign In to View Your Student’s Performance. Email and password (with Remember me for 30 days and Forgot password), or one-click Sign in with Google.
What You’ll See
After signing in, Select Your Student lists every student connected to your account. If you have multiple children on ADE, they’re all here under one login.
Each student’s dashboard shows six at-a-glance tiles:
Average Mastery Score
How well your student is mastering lesson material (80% or higher counts as Mastered).
Completion Rate
How many started lessons they’ve finished.
Avg Time / Lesson
Real measured time your student spends actively working in lessons.
Avg Quiz Score
Average across their unit quizzes. Click it to see every quiz.
Avg Test Score
Average across semester exams, EOC reviews, and test prep. Click it to see every test.
Benchmark Growth
How much they’ve grown from the beginning-of-year benchmark. Click it for the full picture.
The Assignments list
Below the tiles, the Assignments list shows everything your student has been assigned: the type (Regular Assignment, Attendance Recovery, Short-Term Independent Study, or Long-Term Independent Study), the course, lesson, and standard, how far along they are (out of the lesson’s 65 steps), their score and mastery, when they last worked, and any due dates, shown in red if the work is past due.
“I Don’t Understand” events are a good sign
You’ll also see a count of “I Don’t Understand” events, the times your student pressed the built-in help button for another explanation. Don’t worry when you see these: asking for help is a healthy learning habit, and it means the platform re-taught the idea a different way right when they needed it.
Assessment Analytics
At the bottom, Assessment Analytics breaks down your student’s quiz and test performance: average score, pass rate, score distribution, and which specific questions they aced or found hardest.
Good to Know
- Your view is read-only. You can see everything; changes to assignments and grades go through your student’s teacher.
- You only see your own students. Every request is checked on our servers against the students your teacher connected to you: there is no way to see another family’s data.
- Multiple teachers? One account. If your student has several teachers, or you have children in different classrooms, everything appears under the same login automatically.
For Teachers & Independent Study Teachers
The Parents / Guardians Screen
A new left-menu item, Parents / Guardians (directly under My Students), lists every parent connected to your students, with their students’ names and grades, account status, and last sign-in. Search by the parent or the student, and filter by grade.
Inviting a Parent
Start the invitation
Click Invite Parents / Guardians and enter the parent’s email.
Connect the student(s)
Search for the student(s) to connect, by name or email, with multiple selections for families with several children. Classroom teachers see their own students; district independent study teachers can search district-wide.
Send it
Click Send Invitation and ADE handles the rest.
You only ever invite once per family
Parent connections belong to the student, so when a colleague also teaches that student, the parent automatically appears on their Parents / Guardians screen too, and the parent sees work from every teacher. If you invite an email that already has a parent account, ADE simply connects your students to it.
The Pending Invitations tab tracks unclaimed invitations, with Resend (issues a fresh 7-day link and disables the old one) and Cancel.
Managing Parents
- Edit. Update a parent’s name or email (email changes update their sign-in immediately, and any unclaimed invitation follows the new address), and add or remove connected students.
- Remove. Disconnects the parent from your students. Their account is only deleted if no other teacher’s students remain connected, so removing a shared parent never affects another classroom.
For Administrators
- Parent accounts are created and managed by teachers; the district independent study teacher can connect parents to any student in the district.
- Parent accounts do not consume student licenses.
- Every parent action is scoped server-side to their linked students only: access control is enforced in the database on every request, not just in the app.
- Parent account changes (invitations, edits, removals) are recorded in the administrative audit log.
Privacy & Security
The Parent Portal was built for FERPA and COPPA compliance from the first line of code:
- Parents see only the students their teacher has connected, enforced on our servers for every single request.
- Invitation links are single-use, expire in 7 days, and are stored only as cryptographic hashes.
- Parents have read-only access: no grades, assignments, or records can be changed from a parent account.
- Sign in with Google uses your existing Google security (including any two-factor protection on your Google account).
- Parent sessions expire after 12 hours of inactivity (or 30 days with Remember me).
Frequently Asked Questions
I didn’t get my invitation email.
Check your spam folder first, then ask your student’s teacher to resend it. Resending creates a brand-new link and disables the old one.
My link says it’s expired.
Invitation links last 7 days. Your teacher can resend a fresh one in seconds.
It says my account was already claimed.
You’re all set. Go to the Parent Portal page and sign in (use Forgot password if needed, or Sign in with Google if you connected Google).
Can I see my other child too?
Yes. Ask that child’s teacher to connect them to your existing email. Both students will appear under one login.
Do I need an account to sign an agreement?
No. The Sign Agreement option on the Parent Portal page lets you sign a Master Agreement for Attendance Recovery, Short-Term Independent Study, or Long-Term Independent Study with just the agreement code from your school. No account is required to sign.
Can I change my student’s assignments or dispute a grade?
The portal is view-only. Contact your student’s teacher for anything involving assignments or grades.
What’s an “I Don’t Understand” event?
During every lesson, students can press a help button to get the concept explained a different way. The portal counts these so you can see where your student asked for help. It’s a feature, and using it is a good sign.
Does a parent account use up one of our student licenses?
No. Parent accounts do not consume student licenses. Teachers create and manage them at no seat cost, and the district independent study teacher can connect parents to any student in the district.
