Single-Session Protection: No Multiple Tab Cheating
The Problem: Students might try to open the same lesson in multiple browser tabs to view answers in one tab while submitting them in another.
Our Solution:
- Database-Level Session Locking: When a student opens a lesson, our system creates a unique, secure session that locks that lesson to a single browser tab
- Real-Time Validation: Every answer submission is validated against the active session before being accepted
- Visual Indicators: Students see a clear “Active Session” banner showing their session is being monitored
- Automatic Blocking: If a student tries to open the same lesson in another tab, they receive a full-screen message explaining that the lesson is already active elsewhere
- Smart Recovery: If a browser crashes or closes accidentally, students can resume their session without losing progress
For Students
Normal Use (One Tab):
- Students work through lessons naturally without any interruptions

If Multiple Tabs Are Attempted:
- The first tab works normally
- Additional tabs show a clear message: “This lesson is already open in another tab”

Intelligent "Ask a Question" Button: No Direct Answers
The Problem: Students might try to use the help feature to simply ask for the answer to the current question they’re being asked.
Our Solution:
- AI-Powered Cheat Detection: When students click “Ask a Question,” our system analyzes whether they’re asking for help understanding concepts or trying to get the direct answer to a CFU question
- Concept Teaching Instead: If the system detects a student trying to get the direct answer, it responds with “It looks like that’s a specific question from this lesson” and then teaches the underlying concepts to help them understand HOW to solve it, without giving the answer
- Legitimate Help Provided: When students ask genuine educational questions about concepts, definitions, or processes (not specific answers), they receive clear, age-appropriate explanations
- Context-Aware Responses: The system knows what question the student is currently working on and detects attempts to:
- Directly ask for the answer to the current lesson question
- Rephrase the question to get the answer
- Ask “what is the answer” or similar direct requests
Teacher Benefit: The help feature supports genuine learning without enabling academic dishonesty. Students still need to think through and apply concepts to answer questions.
Accurate AI-Powered Answer Evaluation
The Problem: AI systems can sometimes “hallucinate” or incorrectly evaluate student responses, leading to unfair grading.
Our Solution:
- Consistent Grading: AI temperature set to 0.1 for maximum consistency across all student responses
- Natural Language Flexibility: Students receive credit for correct answers even if they phrase them differently than expected (90%+ content accuracy = full credit)
- Authentication Required: All evaluation requests require student authentication – no anonymous or manipulated submissions

- Engagement Even with Outside Help: Even if a student uses another AI tool or resource on a second device or phone to research an answer:
- They must first type or speak the question into that tool (engaging with the question)
- They must read and comprehend the response
- They must then verbally explain it in their own words (demonstrating understanding)
- Our AI evaluates whether they truly understand the concept, not just whether they said the right words
Teacher Benefit: Even when students seek outside help, they’re still required to process information and demonstrate verbal understanding, ensuring some learning occurs in the process.
Automatic Lesson Pause on Tab Switch
The Problem: Students might switch to other tabs or applications and let the lesson play in the background, completing portions without actually paying attention.
Our Solution:
- Tab Visibility Monitoring: The system continuously monitors whether the lesson tab is the active, visible window
- Manual Resume Required: When the student returns to the lesson tab, they must manually click the “Resume” button to continue – the lesson does not auto-play
- Focused Learning: Students must actively pay attention to progress through the lesson
- Background Prevention: This prevents students from:
- Playing the lesson in the background while doing other work
- Multitasking during instruction time
- Gaming the time-on-task metrics
- Immediate Auto-Pause: The moment a student switches to another tab, clicks to another window, or minimizes the browser:
- All audio instruction immediately stops
- The lesson progression halts
- Any active timers pause
Teacher Benefit: Time-on-task data accurately reflects actual engagement, and students cannot passively complete lessons while doing other activities.
Score Integrity: First-Attempt Tracking Only
The Problem: Students might refresh pages or navigate backward to improve their scores by retaking questions.

- First-Attempt Tracking: The system tracks which questions each student has answered and records only their first attempt for scoring purposes
- JSONB Question State Management: Each question’s state is stored in the database using advanced data structures that prevent double-counting
- Automatic Score Recalculation: If a student refreshes the page, their previous answers are restored, but scores remain based on first attempts only
- Transparent Mastery Scoring: Final scores are calculated as: (First-Attempt Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100
- Progress Persistence: All progress is automatically saved to the database every time a student answers a question

Multiple Choice Answer Randomization
The Problem: Students might notice patterns in answer placement (e.g., “the answer is always C”) and use this to guess rather than learn.

- Text-Based Validation: The system stores and validates the full text of correct answers, not just letter positions, preventing manipulation

- Pattern Prevention: Our quality checks ensure no detectable patterns in answer placement across the 27-29 checking for understanding questions per lesson
