Frequently Asked Questions
This FAQ addresses the most common questions we receive from educators, administrators, and IT staff about American Digital Education. Whether you’re wondering about implementation, technical requirements, pricing, or how our AI-powered lessons work, you’ll find clear answers here.
Account & Access
Q: Can one person have multiple roles? A: No. Each email address = one account = one role. If someone needs to be both an administrator and a teacher, they would need two separate email addresses.
Q: What if a teacher already has an account as an Individual Learner? A: They would need to create a new account with a different email for the teacher role. The two accounts are separate and cannot be merged.
Q: Can students access the platform from home? A: Yes! Students can log in from any device with internet access. They’ll see the same content whether at school or at home.
Q: Do students need their own email addresses? A: Yes, each student needs a unique email address to create an account. For younger students, parents may need to create email addresses for them.
Q: What happens if someone forgets their password? A: Click “Forgot Password” on the login page. They’ll receive a reset email. If using Google sign-in, they use Google’s password recovery.
Licensing & Billing
Q: If we purchase 25 student licenses, can we have 30 students if 5 aren’t using it? A: No. Each active student account needs a license, regardless of whether they’re currently using the platform. Inactive accounts (status = inactive) don’t need licenses.
Q: Can we switch from monthly to annual billing? A: Yes. Contact support or manage in billing settings. Change takes effect at the next renewal.
Q: What happens if we don’t renew? A: Accounts become “inactive” but data is preserved. You can reactivate anytime by renewing. All progress, grades, and content remain intact.
Q: Can we get a refund if a student withdraws? A: Refund policy varies. Contact support. Generally, monthly subscriptions can be cancelled for future months. Annual subscriptions may have pro-rated refunds.
Student Management
Q: Can a student be in multiple grades? A: No. Each student has one grade level. However, a teacher can assign content from different grade levels if needed for differentiation.
Q: What if siblings share an email address? A: Each student needs their own email. If siblings share, they would share an account (not recommended). Create separate emails for each student.
Q: Can students message each other? A: No. Our platform does not include messaging or social features. This is by design for safety and focus on learning.
Q: How do we handle students who need accommodations (IEP/504)? A: Teachers can:
- Hide difficult content
- Assign lower grade level content
- Allow more time (unlimited retakes)
- Adjust which courses are visible Specific accommodations are implemented through content visibility controls.
Q: Can parents see their child’s progress? A: Not directly in the system currently. Teachers can export progress reports and share them with parents. The parent portal is planned for future release.
Content & Curriculum
Q: Can we upload our own content? A: No. Our platform provides state and national standards-aligned curriculum.
Q: In how many languages is content available? A: English and Spanish only.
Q: Can students skip lessons? A: Only if the teacher allows it. Teachers control which content is visible and can hide lessons students should skip.
Q: Are lessons aligned to Common Core or state standards? A: Yes. All lessons are aligned to educational standards. You can view standards alignment in course descriptions.
Q: Can we suggest content to be added? A: Yes! Contact support with your curriculum needs. We regularly add content based on customer feedback.

For IT Administrators
Q: How long does SSO setup take? A: Most districts complete setup in under 2 hours. Our team provides step-by-step guidance and tests the connection with you.
Q: Do you support rostering from our Student Information System? A: Yes, through ClassLink’s OneRoster integration. Student rosters sync automatically every night. The sync handles new enrollments, transfers, withdrawals, and updates.
Q: What happens if roster sync fails? A: Partial failures don’t stop the entire sync – we continue processing other students. Failed records are logged with detailed error messages, and admins can retry failed records individually. If sync fails 3 times in a row, we disable auto-sync and alert administrators.
Q: What if we use a different SSO provider? A: If your provider supports SAML 2.0, we can integrate it. Contact us to discuss your specific needs (Azure AD, Okta, OneLogin, Ping Identity, etc.).
Q: Can we restrict access by IP address or location? A: Yes, we support IP whitelisting for organizations that require it. Contact us to configure.
Q: Do you provide data processing agreements (DPA)? A: Yes, we sign DPAs with every school district. Our standard agreement covers FERPA, COPPA, and state-specific requirements.
Q: How do you handle data breaches? A: We maintain an incident response plan and notify affected parties within 24 hours of discovery, as required by law. We’ve never had a data breach. We follow a 6-step process: Detection, Containment, Investigation, Remediation, Recovery, and Post-Incident Review.
Q: Can we audit your security? A: Yes, we welcome security reviews and can provide our most recent penetration test results and security documentation.
Q: Where are service role keys and API credentials stored? A: All credentials are stored in our secure database vault with encryption at rest. Nothing is hardcoded in our application code or configuration files. We follow industry best practices for secret management.
Q: What happens when a student leaves the school? A: ClassLink roster sync automatically marks them as inactive (doesn’t delete – preserves historical data). Inactive students cannot log in. If they return, they’re automatically reactivated.
Q: How does reCAPTCHA Enterprise differ from the free version? A: reCAPTCHA Enterprise provides advanced fraud prevention, password defense, behavioral analysis, account takeover detection, and coordinated attack identification. It’s specifically designed for high-security applications like educational platforms handling student data.
Q: What’s the difference between reCAPTCHA Password Defense and Have I Been Pwned? A: reCAPTCHA Password Defense provides real-time protection against credential stuffing and automated attacks happening right now. It blocks suspicious login attempts instantly with a database of 4+ billion compromised credentials. Have I Been Pwned checks passwords against historical breach databases (12+ billion accounts) and warns users during signup if they’re choosing a compromised password. Both work together: one prevents active attacks, the other educates users about password safety.
Q: Does password breach checking slow down login or signup? A: No. Both checks happen in milliseconds using cryptographic techniques and k-anonymity. Users never notice the additional security, and their passwords are never exposed during the check.
Q: Can we see security metrics for bot detection and fraud prevention? A: Yes. Admins have access to security monitoring dashboards showing reCAPTCHA scores, blocked credential stuffing attempts, fraud patterns, attack trends, and breach notification statistics.
Q: Are passwords sent to third parties for breach checking? A: No. We use cryptographic hashing and k-anonymity techniques (specifically, password range queries). Only partial password hashes are sent, making it impossible to determine the actual password. Your passwords never leave our system in plaintext.
Q: What happens if a user’s password is found in a breach? A: At signup: They receive a warning that this password appears in known data breaches and are encouraged to choose a different one. The system shows the password strength meter in red/yellow to guide them. At login: If the password is actively being used in credential stuffing attacks, the login is blocked and the user must reset their password.
Q: Will I be notified if someone tries to use a compromised password? A: Yes. If someone attempts to log in with credentials actively being used in attacks, the system automatically blocks the attempt and logs the event. During signup, users are warned if they choose a password found in historical breaches. All events are logged in your security dashboard.
Q: What should I do if students are choosing weak passwords? A: The system automatically warns students during signup if they choose a password found in data breaches. Encourage them to follow the visual strength meter (aim for yellow or green). You can also enable organization-wide password policies requiring stronger passwords (minimum length, complexity requirements).
Q: What’s the difference between standard rate limiting and enterprise fraud prevention? A: Rate limiting blocks simple attacks (too many attempts from one IP). Enterprise fraud prevention (reCAPTCHA Enterprise) uses machine learning to detect sophisticated attacks like distributed bot networks, account takeover campaigns, and coordinated fake enrollment schemes. They work together for comprehensive protection.
Q: Can we see which passwords triggered breach warnings? A: For privacy reasons, no. The system logs that a breach warning occurred and whether the user chose a different password, but never logs the actual password. You’ll see aggregate statistics (e.g., “15 breach warnings this week, 12 users chose different passwords”).
Q: Is there any cost for the breach checking services? A: The reCAPTCHA Password Defense is included with reCAPTCHA Enterprise. Have I Been Pwned API access is free for reasonable use. Both are included in your platform subscription at no additional cost.
Q: How do you prevent IP spoofing attacks on rate limiting? A: We’ve properly configured our server’s proxy trust settings to match our infrastructure (single proxy layer), which ensures accurate client IP tracking. Every request is correctly attributed to its true source IP address, making our rate limiting fully effective against both individual and distributed attacks.
Q: Can users have multiple login methods? A: Yes. Users can link up to 5 different login methods to one account:
- Email/password
- Microsoft
- ClassLink
- SAML
Q: What happens if a user’s email changes? A: Contact your administrator to update the email in the platform. SSO providers (Google, Microsoft) continue working since they’re linked by provider ID, not email address.
Q: Can we require multi-factor authentication? A: Yes, through your chosen SSO provider:
- Google: Enable 2-Step Verification in Google Workspace
- Microsoft: Enable MFA in Azure AD
- SAML: Configure in your identity provider
Q: What if our SSO provider is down? A: Users who have set a password can sign in with email/password as backup. We recommend teachers maintain a password as a redundant access method.
Q: How do we disable a former employee’s access? A: Disable their account in your SSO provider (Google, Microsoft, or SAML IdP). They immediately lose access. For additional security, deactivate their account in our Admin Dashboard.
Q: Can we test before rolling out to everyone? A: Yes. Enable SSO in Admin Dashboard, test with your admin account, roll out to the pilot group, then expand when ready.
Q: What data does the platform receive from SSO providers? A: From Google:
- Name, email address, email verification status, Google user ID
From Microsoft:
- Name, email address, user ID, group memberships (if configured)
From SAML:
- Attributes you configure (typically name, email, role)
We DO NOT receive: passwords, email history, Drive/OneDrive files, or personal information beyond listed items.
Q: How much does SSO cost? A: SSO features included in your subscription at no additional cost. You only need your existing Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or SAML identity provider subscription.
Q: Can we exempt certain users from 2FA? A: Yes. Administrators can grant exemptions with documented justification. This is useful for special circumstances, accessibility needs, or temporary situations.
Q: What if an administrator leaves? A: The system includes last-admin protections. If only one administrator remains, they cannot be removed or have their access restricted until another administrator is designated.
Q: Can we require 2FA immediately without a grace period? A: Yes. You can set the grace period to 0 days for immediate enforcement. However, we recommend a 7-30 day grace period for better user experience and adoption.
Q: How do we handle teacher turnover? A: When a teacher leaves, simply disable their account through normal offboarding procedures. Their 2FA settings are automatically removed. New teachers set up 2FA during their onboarding.
Q: Has 2FA been security tested? A: Yes. Our 2FA implementation has undergone comprehensive security testing including penetration testing, compliance verification against OWASP 2025 standards, and third-party security audit. Result: Zero critical vulnerabilities, A+ security grade.
Q: Does 2FA work with our SSO provider? A: Yes. 2FA can be layered on top of Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or SAML-based single sign-on. Users authenticate through your SSO provider first, then provide the 2FA code.
Q: What browsers are supported for 2FA? A: All modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on both desktop and mobile devices.
Q: Will 2FA work on Chromebooks? A: Yes. Teachers use their phones for the authenticator app, and the web interface works perfectly on Chromebooks.
Q: Can we integrate 2FA with our student information system? A: While 2FA protects access to American Digital Education, it does not directly integrate with external SIS systems. However, many schools use this as a model for adding 2FA to other systems.
For Teachers
Q: What if a student forgets their password? A: You can reset it for them instantly from your class roster. They’ll create a new password on next login. Password reset links are also sent to their email if they provided one (age 13+ students).
Q: Can students share class codes with friends from other schools? A: Codes only work for students in your organization. Plus, you can disable codes or set enrollment limits anytime. Our fraud prevention system detects suspicious enrollment patterns (e.g., rapid enrollments from the same IP, enrollments outside school hours).
Q: What if I entered a student in the wrong class? A: You can remove students from your class roster with one click. They won’t lose their account or progress in other classes.
Q: Do I need to verify every student enrollment? A: No, enrollments are automatic when students use your class code or link. You can review your roster anytime and remove anyone who shouldn’t be there.
Q: Can I have multiple classes? A: Yes, create as many classes as you need. Each gets its own unique enrollment code.
Q: What happens at the end of the school year? A: You can archive classes or disable enrollment codes. Student accounts remain active unless you or an admin deletes them. You can export final rosters and grades for your records.
Q: Can I reuse a class code from last year? A: No, each class gets a new unique code. This prevents students from accidentally joining old classes and maintains clear separation between school years.
Q: Will I be notified if someone tries to use a compromised password? A: Yes. If someone attempts to log in with credentials actively being used in attacks, the system automatically blocks the attempt and you’ll see it in your security dashboard. During signup, users are warned if they choose a password that appears in historical breaches.
Q: What should I do if students are choosing weak passwords? A: The system automatically warns students during signup if they choose a password found in data breaches. Encourage them to follow the visual strength meter (aim for yellow or green). The system shows red for weak passwords, yellow for medium, and green for strong.
Q: Can I see if my students’ accounts are secure? A: Teachers don’t have access to individual student password information (for privacy). However, the system automatically enforces password security requirements and warns students about compromised passwords. You can encourage students to use strong, unique passwords.
Q: What happens if my phone breaks? A: You can use one of your 8 printed backup codes to log in, then regenerate new codes and set up 2FA on a replacement phone. Alternatively, an administrator can provide temporary emergency access.
Q: Do I need internet on my phone? A: No. Authenticator apps work offline by generating codes based on time. The phone just needs to have the correct date and time set.
Q: Can I have multiple trusted devices? A: Yes. You can mark your work laptop, home computer, and tablet as trusted. Each device maintains its own 30-day trust period.
Q: What if we have shared classroom computers? A: You should NOT mark shared computers as “trusted.” Enter the 2FA code each time you log in on shared devices. This prevents unauthorized access by others using the same computer.
Q: Will this slow me down? A: The first login on a new device takes an extra 30-45 seconds. However, you can mark your personal devices as “trusted” for 30 days, after which no 2FA code is needed during that period. Most teachers complete their daily login in under a minute total.
Q: What if I lose my backup codes? A: Contact your administrator for emergency access, then regenerate new backup codes immediately after logging in.
For Parents
Q: Does my child need an email address? A: No, students under 13 do not need an email address to create an account. Email is optional for students 13 and older (grades 7-12).
Q: How do I know my child’s data is safe? A: We comply with COPPA and FERPA federal regulations. We use enterprise-grade security including encrypted connections, secure password storage, bot protection, fraud prevention, real-time attack blocking, and breach notification. We never sell information and only use data for educational purposes.
Q: Can I see what my child is learning? A: Contact your child’s teacher for access to progress reports. Some districts provide parent portal access through their Student Information System.
Q: How do I delete my child’s account? A: Contact your school administrator or email us directly at privacy@americandigitaledu.com. We’ll delete all personal data within 30 days.
Q: Who can see my child’s information? A: Only your child’s teachers and school administrators within your organization. We never share data with outside parties without explicit permission. Each organization’s data is completely isolated.
Q: What if my child is under 13? A: We do not collect email addresses from children under 13 (COPPA compliance). We may collect your email separately for parental consent and communications. We collect minimal data: name, username, password, grade level, and learning progress.
Q: Can I update my contact information? A: Yes, contact your school administrator or email us at privacy@americandigitaledu.com.
Q: What if my child’s password was in a data breach somewhere else? A: Our dual-layer protection system handles this automatically:
- At signup: The system warns if they’re choosing a password from historical breaches and encourages them to choose a different one
- At login: If their password is actively being used in credential stuffing attacks, the system blocks the login and requires a password reset
- This protects your child even if they reused a password that was compromised on another website
Q: Does the password checking expose my child’s password? A: No. The system uses advanced cryptographic techniques (k-anonymity and password range queries) to check passwords without ever exposing them. Even the checking services never see the actual password. Your child’s privacy is completely protected.
Q: Should I be concerned about my child’s password being checked against breach databases? A: No, this is a security feature that protects your child. The checking happens invisibly and privately (using k-anonymity), and it prevents your child from using a password that has been compromised in data breaches. This is similar to how banks check for fraudulent credit card transactions – it’s protective, not invasive.
Q: What should I tell my child about creating a strong password? A: Encourage them to:
- Use at least 8 characters with both letters and numbers
- Avoid using passwords they’ve used on other websites
- Follow the color-coded strength meter (aim for yellow or green)
- Not share their password with friends
Choose a password they’ll remember but others can’t guess
For Administrators
Q: How much does it cost? A: Contact us for district pricing. Pricing is typically per-student or per-teacher.
Q: Can we pilot with one school before district-wide rollout? A: Absolutely. Most districts start with a pilot school (or even just a few classrooms), then expand after seeing results. We provide full support during the pilot period.
Q: Do you provide training for teachers? A: Yes, we offer live training webinars, video tutorials, comprehensive documentation, and ongoing support. Most teachers are comfortable within 15 minutes. We also provide “train the trainer” sessions for district technology coaches.
Q: What kind of reports do you provide? A: We provide:
- Usage reports (daily active users, logins, time on platform)
- Progress reports by class or student
- Engagement analytics (which lessons, quiz scores)
- Enrollment statistics
- Security monitoring dashboards (reCAPTCHA scores, blocked attacks, fraud patterns)
- Breach notification statistics
- Custom reports on request
Q: Can we white-label the platform? A: Not at this time but might be a feature we roll out in the future.
Q: What happens if we decide to stop using the service? A: You can export all student data in standard formats (CSV, JSON) before canceling. We delete all district data within 30 days of cancellation, as specified in the Data Processing Agreement.
Q: Can we require 2FA for all teachers and admins? A: Yes, organization admins can set 2FA policy to optional, recommended, or mandatory. Mandatory policy includes a 7-day grace period for users to set up 2FA before access is restricted.
Q: How do we handle teachers who get locked out of 2FA? A: Admins can disable 2FA for locked-out users from the admin dashboard. All actions are logged in the audit trail. Users can also use backup codes provided during 2FA setup.
Q: Can teachers approve students or do admins have to? A: Teachers manage enrollment in their own classes (approve/remove students via class codes). Admins approve new teacher accounts to ensure only authorized staff have access.
Q: How do we handle the end of the school year? A: Options include:
- Archive classes (preserve data, disable enrollment)
- Export rosters and grades
- Disable student accounts (can be re-enabled)
- Delete inactive students (permanent, 30-day process)
- Roll over classes to new school year
For Classlink
Q: Can we integrate with our Student Information System (SIS)? A: Yes, through ClassLink’s OneRoster API. We support nightly roster synchronization including enrollments, transfers, and withdrawals. Contact us to discuss integration with your specific SIS.
Q: What if some students fail to sync but others succeed? A: Our system uses intelligent partial failure handling. If individual student records encounter errors (for example, missing required data), the sync continues processing other students rather than stopping entirely. You’ll receive a detailed report showing which students synced successfully and which encountered issues, along with specific error messages to help you resolve them. Failed records can be retried individually once you’ve addressed the underlying issue.
Q: Will roster sync delete students who leave my school? A: No. When students are removed from your ClassLink roster (due to graduation, transfer, or withdrawal), we mark them as “inactive” rather than deleting their accounts. This preserves their historical learning data and progress reports for compliance purposes (FERPA requires maintaining educational records). Inactive students cannot log in, but administrators can still access their historical data. If a student returns to your school, they’re automatically reactivated with all their previous progress intact.
Q: How do I know if roster sync is working correctly? A: The Roster Sync Management dashboard shows you the status of every sync with clear visual indicators. Green means successful completion, yellow indicates warnings (like duplicate records that were skipped), and red shows errors that need attention. You can view detailed metrics including how many students were processed, created, updated, or deactivated. The system also sends email alerts to administrators if syncs fail multiple times consecutively.
Q: What happens if roster sync fails three times in a row? A: To protect data integrity, the system automatically disables automated synchronization after three consecutive failures and immediately alerts your organization’s administrators via email. This prevents potentially problematic syncs from continuing to run. You can review the error logs, address the underlying issue (often a configuration problem or temporary ClassLink API issue), and then re-enable automated sync from the admin dashboard.
Accessibility
Q: Will accommodations slow down my students’ progress? A: No. Content complexity adjustment ensures students learn the same academic standard at their reading level. Research shows students progress faster when content matches their comprehension ability.
Q: Can students see that they have different settings than classmates? A: Students see their own personalized version. They don’t see a comparison to peers. Accommodations are invisible to other students-no stigma.
Q: What if a student’s IEP changes mid-year? A: Update accommodation settings in 30 seconds. Changes apply immediately to all future lessons. Past lessons remain graded as originally completed.
Q: Do I need to set accommodations for every lesson individually? A: No. Set once per student. Accommodations apply to all 65 order indexes across all lessons automatically.
Q: Do parents need their own login accounts?
A: No. Parents use the same login credentials as their child. For students under 13, parents create the account password during the activation process (COPPA requirement). Parents can then log in anytime to view progress, adjust settings, or manage the account. This is simpler and more secure than maintaining separate parent accounts.
Q: My student says the font looks different from their classmates. Is something wrong?
A: No, this is intentional! If you’ve selected a dyslexia-friendly font (like OpenDyslexic or Comic Sans) in their accommodations, they’ll see all text in that font. This helps them read more easily. Their classmates see the standard font. The content and lessons are identical-only the visual presentation is different.
Q: What’s the difference between high contrast mode and dark mode?
A: High contrast mode uses pure black and white with maximum contrast (7:1 ratio) for students with low vision. Dark mode uses softer dark gray and off-white colors to reduce eye strain during extended study sessions. High contrast is for accessibility needs; dark mode is for comfort. Students can choose whichever works best for them.
Q: A student is complaining that animations make them feel dizzy. What should I do?
A: Enable “Reduced Motion” in their accommodations immediately. This is common for students with vestibular disorders, motion sensitivity, or certain types of ADHD/autism. Once enabled, all animations and auto-advancing content will stop, and the student will control pacing manually. The platform will function identically but without motion effects.
Q: Can students adjust these settings themselves, or do I need to do it?
A: For enrolled students, you set the initial accommodations based on their IEP or 504 plan. Students can request changes, which you approve. Students can also enable optional comfort features (like dark mode or adjusting text size within reasonable limits). For individual learners without teachers, students control all their own settings.
Q: Will these accommodations affect how lessons are graded?
A: No. Whether a student uses dyslexia-friendly fonts, reduced motion, high contrast, or simplified content, grading criteria remain the same. You’ll grade their work identically to any other student. The accommodations only change how content is presented, not what’s being taught or assessed.
Q: How do I know which font to choose for a dyslexic student?
A: Start with OpenDyslexic-it’s specifically designed for dyslexia. If the student doesn’t like it, try Comic Sans (research shows it actually helps despite its reputation). Some students prefer simple fonts like Arial or Verdana. Ask the student which feels easiest to read, or check their IEP for font preferences. You can change it anytime.
Compliance
Q: How do I prove to my district that this platform is compliant? A: Download the VPAT document from our website. It lists every WCAG 2.1 AA criterion with evidence of compliance. Third-party audit report also available.
Q: What if parents request their child’s data? A: Parents click “Export My Child’s Data” in their portal. System generates downloadable file within 24 hours. No IT involvement needed.
Q: Are you really FERPA compliant, or just “FERPA-ready”? A: Fully compliant. We implement all FERPA requirements: parental consent, audit logging, annual notifications, data access controls, and deletion rights.
Q: Can you sign a Data Processing Agreement (DPA)? A: Yes. We provide a standard DPA for all districts. Custom language accommodated within reason.
